What to wear

Chandigarh's summers are hot-hot. Light, airy cottons are the most comfortable in this season. If one has to be out in
the sun for any length of time, it's wise not to expose too much skin -- long sleeves will save you from a sunburn. Take a
tip from the traditional dress of this region which includes a head-covering for both men and women -- a hat or scarf is a
good idea. The traditional Indian sandal -- chappal in Hindi -- is just right when one is in the city. Footwear for a village
visit should be a bit more protective.

The Monsoon in Chandigarh brings some delicious cool days and some of sweltering steamy ones. Summery clothes hold
good for this season -- and synthetics that dry quickly -- but don't expect good leather shoes to last long. Put on your
all-weather footwear.

The perfect months of deep blue skies, mellow sun and cool evening breeze begin with September and last right through
November. Temperatures during this period are quite like English or American summers.

Winter is almost, but never quite, freezing -- rather like October in Europe or North America. Sweaters, jackets, shawls,
mufflers and nice warm socks are what you'll want. Sunny winter afternoons are delightful but early mornings are chilly
and it is chilly again as soon as the sun goes down. This is the season when Chandigarh men blossom out in three-piece
suits and the ladies are at their best in silk saris or salwaar-kameez topped by graceful shawls.

In matters of dress, Chandigarh's social climate is cosmopolitan. The ubiquitous T-shirt and blue jeans makes young
people in Chandigarh indistinguishable from their counterparts abroad. Skirts are quite acceptable and likewise shorts.
Chandigarh's swimming pools are probably not ready for thong bikinis yet so pack conventional swimwear.

                                     Places to shop

SECTOR 17 : CITY CENTRE

The main shopping and commercial centre of Chandigarh is Sector 17. This vast commercial complex is a padestrian's
paradise with four main piazzas meeting at a 'chowk'. It provides something for everyone, from  hectic  business
activity   to  unhurried  window  shopping  and  even  crowd gazing in the vicinity of the fountain. Airconditioned
showrooms and departmental stores cater to   the  needs  of  shoppers. Government  Emporia, innumerable   shops,
eateries, coffee houses, bars and pubs keep the visitor fully engrossed.

The City Centre or Sector 17, as it is popularly called, is architecturally a blend of cuboid  building blocks and open
spaces. The piazzas livens up in the afternoon with the office crowds out in the open spaces and shopping colonnades to
refresh themselves. In the evenings, shoppers and tourists, enjoying ice creams or popcorns, sit on the steps of the
"dove of peace" sculpture, where water cascades down from one level to another in geometrically shaped tanks, amidst
delightful play of colourful lights.

Sector 17 is  the hub of the town where important government offices of Punjab, Haryana and UT such as Estate Office
Chandigarh, Udyog Bhawan Punjab, Central Income Tax building, Accountant General Punjab building and Haryana
Mini - Secretariat and the Chandigarh District Courts are located.

MADHYA MARG

Madhya Marg is the principal avenue of the City on which a large number of institutional and commercial
establishments are located.  The road connects the PGI and University with the Railway Station.  Starting from the PGI
end we approach Sector 11 where the   Government College for Boys and the Government College for Girls are located.
The Central Craft Institute, Women's Polytechnic, the Home Science College, DAV College for Boys and College of Art
are situated in Sector 10. On the other side of the road in Sector 15 are located the Congress Bhawan, Guru Gobind
Singh Bhawan and Lala Lajpat Rai Bhawan.  The General Hospital is located in Sector 16.

Thereafter, we approach the Housing Board Chowk.  On the right side is the City Centre, the main commercial centre
of the Chandigarh.  But on the left side of the Sector 9 one can find the most glamorous shops and establishments of the
City. We now approach the press chowk which was earlier a round-about but now traffic lights have been installed.
Sector 8 on the left of this road contains commercial establishments and this continues in Sector 7 and 26.  A number of
corporate institutions have their offices on the right side of this road in Sector 18 and 27.   In Sector 26 are located a
number of educational institutions: Technical Teachers Training Institute, Central Polytechnic and Guru Gobind Singh
College.  Finally, we reach the transport chowk and on the left side is the Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable market.
